Cardinals Earn First Shutout Win of 2025 on Thursday Night Against Clearwater

JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (8-4) earn their first shutout victory of the 2025 season as they defeated the Clearwater Threshers (7-5) by a final score of 3-0 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. With the win, the Cardinals take over the top record in the Florida State League.

The Cardinals got help from Clearwater starting pitcher Enrique Segura (L, 0-2) in the bottom of the first to start the scoring. With two outs, three consecutive walks were drawn and a wild pitch allowed Cade McGee to score from third base to give Palm Beach a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, with runners at the corners and one out, Christian Martin drove in Nathan Church on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0 after three innings.

Meanwhile, Palm Beach starting pitcher Jason Savacool (W, 1-0) finished with his best start so far of 2025 as he went five scoreless innings with four hits and one walk allowed and also three strikeouts. In the top of the first inning, Savacool also tallied his second successful pickoff when he nabbed Dante Nori at first base after a walk.

Michael Watson (H, 1) came out of the Cardinals' bullpen and retired all six batters he faced with four strikeouts in two innings.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Deniel Ortiz launched his first professional home run, a solo home run to left field, to give Palm Beach another insurance run to take a 3-0 lead.

Mason Burns (Sv, 1) finished the job for the Palm Beach pitching staff and slammed the door on the first shutout win of the 2025 season for the Cardinals holding on to the 3-0 victory on Thursday night.

Cade McGee also finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored to lead the offense. Palm Beach improved to 5-0 when scoring at least one run in the first inning and also improved to 8-2 when hitting at least one home run.

With the series in favor of the Cardinals two games to one, the series heads into the weekend portion as the next game takes place on Friday, April 18th with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Click here to purchase your tickets.
