JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (1-1) fell to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels by a final score of 6-4 on Saturday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium to even the weekend slate at a game a piece.
After both teams went scoreless in the first inning, Fort Myers got on the scoreboard in the top of the second off of Palm Beach starting pitcher Jason Savacool. With runners on first and second base, Maddux Houghton brought a run home off an error in left field by Bryce Madron for the first run of the game. Angel Del Rosario followed that Houghton single with a two-RBI infield single of his own which put the Mighty Mussels ahead by a 3-0 score.
The Cardinals responded with one run in the bottom of the frame thanks to a solo home run by Cade McGee to cut the deficit to 3-1. The 3-1 score remained until the bottom of the fifth inning as Palm Beach continued to chip away at the Fort Myers lead. McGee drew a one out walk, stole second base, and advanced to third base on a throwing error. Then, Madron drove in McGee on a RBI groundout to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Savacool finished his first start of 2025 with four innings and allowed three runs (no earned runs) on three hits, one walk, and tallied two strikeouts.
However, the Mighty Mussels got the run back in the top of the sixth inning on a long solo home run by Jose Rodriguez and Fort Myers took a 4-2 lead. Later, in the top of the eighth, the Mussels brought two runs across on wild pitches to extend the lead to 6-2. Palm Beach answered back in the bottom of the frame with two more runs. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jose Suarez drove in Anyelo Encarnacion on a RBI groundout. A couple of batters later, Christian Martin scored on a wild pitch to get closer at 6-4. However, the scoring ended for both teams and the Cardinals suffer their first loss of the 2025 season.
The rubber match is set between Palm Beach and Fort Myers for Sunday, April 6th with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 P.M. Click here to purchase your tickets.
