JUPITER, FL – After leading through the first eight innings of the game, the Palm Beach Cardinals (56-39, 19-10) fell in 10 innings to the Bradenton Marauders (41-56, 12-19) by a final score of 3-1 on in the series opener on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Dating back to 2022, Palm Beach has lost eight-straight games to Bradenton with the last win being May 22, 2022.

In the first home game since the All-Star break, the Cardinals would score the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning off of Bradenton starting pitcher Carlos Jimenez. With one out, Sammy Hernandez reached on an infield single. Later in the inning with two outs, Hernandez advanced to second base on a passed ball. Jose Suarez would hit a ground-rule RBI double to score Hernandez and give Palm Beach the early 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Palm Beach starting pitcher Jason Savacool was in cruise control for his 15th start of the season. Savacool finished with six scoreless innings and allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out six batters and settled for a no-decision.

The ballgame settled down for both offenses as neither team could get a runner across home plate in the seventh and eighth innings.

However, in the top of the ninth inning, the Marauders lived up to their nickname. Luis Gastelum (BS, 2) went out for his third inning of relief and Esmerlyn Valdez would lead off the frame with a solo home run to immediately tie the game at 1-1.

After the Cardinals were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Bradenton went back to work on offense in extra innings. Angel Cuenca (L, 3-2) came out of the Palm Beach bullpen to pitch the 10th inning. With the placed-runner at second base, Javier Rivas hit a two-run home run to left field to put the Marauders ahead for the first time in the game and led 3-1. The Cardinals had no further answer at the plate and fell by a final score of 3-1 to open the series.

The St. Louis Cardinals organization made several transactions throughout the system today, including activating 2024 first-round pick JJ Wetherholt who finished his professional debut by going 1-for-2 with a single and a walk while making a couple of plays at shortstop.

The Cardinals and Marauders will conclude the month of July with game two of the series on Wednesday, July 31st with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Click here to purchase your tickets.
