Palm Beach Surrenders 10 Runs Late in 10-5 Loss to Lakeland

The Palm Beach Cardinals (8-5) allowed 10 unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings and fell late to the Lakeland Flying Tigers (9-4) by a final score of 10-5 on Friday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Kade Kretzschmar and Ross Friedrick hit back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners and Miguel Villarroel drove one run in on an RBI single to give Palm Beach a 1-0 lead.
After two consecutive scoreless innings, the Beach Birds got back to work offensively. With two outs and runners at first and second base, Jose Cordoba and Kretzschmar hit back-to-back RBI singles for two more runs. Friedrick would then hit the only extra-base hit for the Cardinals tonight on an RBI double to make it a 5-0 lead.
But in the top of the seventh inning, the game would be flipped upside down. Lakeland would send seven men to the plate and four runs came in to score highlighted by a Josue Briceno RBI single and a two-RBI double from Clayton Campbell to cut the Palm Beach lead to 5-4. In the very next inning, the Flying Tigers sent 10 men to the plate and exploded for six runs on five hits and three walks drawn and capped the scoring in the ballgame defeating the Cardinals by a final score of 10-5.
Kretzschmar, Friedrick, Villarroel, Cordoba, and Johnfrank Salazar all had two hits in the ballgame contributing to the team's season-high 12 hits in the game. Cardinals starting pitcher Quinn Mathews (No. 21 STL prospect according to MLB Pipeline) went 3 2/3 innings with no runs allowed on one hit, four walks, one hit-by-pitch, and eight strikeouts in a no-decision. Henry Gomez tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts and also got a no-decision.
