STATEN ISLAND - In a duel of food-themed nicknamed teams, the Staten Island Pizza Rats fell 9-0 to the Vermont Maple Kings at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, on Friday night.
After receiving a challenge from the Vermont Lake Monsters, the Staten Island Yankees played as the Pizza Rats for the final time this season, while the visitors assumed their previously used identity as the Maple Kings.
The Maple Kings struck first in the top of the second inning, pushing one run across on a Pizza Rat throwing error, and another on a sacrifice fly.
Vermont extended their lead to 3-0 on another Staten Island throwing error in the top of the third frame, then scored two in the sixth, and four in the seventh.
Unfortunately, the Pizza Rats could not match the sweetness of the Maple Kings offense, as Vermont held Staten Island to only _ hits, and no runs.
Eduardo Torrealba did have a multi-hit game for the Pizza Rats, going 2 for 3, while Luis Gil struck out seven runs in four innings.
The Staten Island Yankees will return to action tomorrow at 6:00 p.m., taking on the Brooklyn Cyclones at MCU Park on Coney Island, kicking off the final three-game series of the 2018 regular campaign. The Yankees will enter the contest one and a half games behind the Auburn Doubledays, and one game behind Brooklyn, in the New York-Penn League Wild Card Standings.
