ASHEVILLE, NC-- The Colorado Rockies have named Robinson Cancel, 41, as Asheville's manager for the 2018 season. Cancel spent 2017, his lone year in the Rockies organization, as a coach for the Rockies' Short-Season Class-A affiliate, the Boise Hawks. Prior to 2017, Cancel managed the GCL Braves in 2015 and the Danville Braves in 2016. The Tourists manager over the previous three years, Warren Schaeffer, was promoted and will spend 2018 managing the Hartford Yard Goats; the Rockies' Double-A affiliate.

Cancel was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 16th round of the 1994 free agent draft. The former catcher spent seven years in the Brewers organization, including a stint at the Major League level in 1999. Cancel also appeared in Major League games with the New York Mets (2008-09), and the Houston Astros (2011). Overall, Cancel's playing career spanned 20 years in the professional ranks.

"Robinson brings not only managerial experience to the Tourists, he also brings passion and energy for the game and for teaching," stated Rockies Senior Director of Player Development Zach Wilson. "All of this, paired with his character, will shine through as he represents the Rockies, the Tourists, and the community both on and off the field."

Joining Asheville's first-year manager on staff are Pitching Coach Ryan Kibler and Hitting Coach Norberto "Paco" Martin. Both are returning to the Tourists for their second season. In 2017, Kibler led Asheville's pitching staff to a 3.90 team ERA. Under Kibler, the Tourists bullpen statistically was the best Asheville has seen in the last 25 years. Martin oversaw Asheville's hitting attack to a .266 team batting average; the best in the South Atlantic League. Asheville also clubbed 115 Home Runs to pace the circuit.

Marv Foley also returns for his sixth season as Asheville's Supervisor of Development. Foley has been with the Rockies organization for 16 years; including a two-year stint as the Rockies' Triple-A Manager.

"I am honored to welcome Robinson and his family to Asheville," said Tourists president Brian DeWine. "We look forward to another memorable season at McCormick Field and are thrilled Robinson will be part of the Tourists organization moving forward."

The Asheville Tourists open up the 2018 season on April 5 at Delmarva. The first home game of 2018 is on Thursday, April 12 vs. Columbia.
