The Black Bears punched their ticket to the Championship game with an 11-8 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on August 29. After finishing second in the first half of the season 4.0 games behind Trenton, West Virginia led the league the entirety of the second half and finished with a 31-16 record (46-27 overall).

Since beginning the second half of the season, the Bears have played the Thunder nine times, winning six of eight games played to completion. West Virginia leads the league in run differential (+82) and ended the season 5.5 games ahead of the second-place Frederick Keys. With a 12-9 away record this half of the season, West Virginia travels to Trenton with the most road wins (20-15 away overall).

The Black Bears look to claim their second straight MLB Draft League title, having won the championship over the Williamsport Crosscutters at Monongalia County Ballpark last September.
