Charlotte 49ers Baseball Returns to BB&T Ballpark for Three Games in 2016

November 4, 2015

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - On March 31, 2015 in front of 8,147 fans, the Charlotte 49ers faced the N.C. State Wolfpack in the first-ever collegiate baseball game in BB&T Ballpark history. One season later, the Charlotte 49ers will return to Uptown Charlotte in 2016 to play three games at the home of the Knights. The first of the three games will take place on Tuesday, March 8 against the University of Georgia. Additionally, the 49ers will face N.C. State University on Tuesday, March 29 and Winthrop University on Tuesday, April 5.

"We are very pleased to establish a tradition of bringing collegiate baseball to Uptown Charlotte," said Knights Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice President Dan Rajkowski. "The 49ers have become a great partner to the Knights and after the success of last year's game, we can't wait to welcome them back for three games in 2016. We look forward to bringing in Winthrop University, N.C. State, and the University of Georgia as well."

The Charlotte 49ers are members of Conference USA and are led by head baseball coach Loren Hibbs. Over the course of his 23 seasons at the helm of the 49ers, Hibbs has averaged more than 30 wins per season in his career. He has taken the 49ers to all five of their NCAA Tournament appearances and he notched his 700th win on April 4, 2015 at Old Dominion.

"We are very excited about the upcoming 2016 season and the chance to play at BB&T Ballpark," said Hibbs. "Last year was an overwhelming success and our goal is to duplicate that again in 2016. Thanks to Dan (Rajkowski) and Scotty (Brown) for providing us these opportunities in 2016. We value the ongoing relationship we have with the Knights. They are a first class organization in every way."

The 49ers will be the home team in two of the three games, while Winthrop University of Rock Hill, SC, will be the home squad on April 5. The Eagles, who play in the Big South Conference, are led by head baseball coach Tom Riginos, who enters his sixth season with the team in 2016. He led the Eagles to the 2014 Big South Conference Southern Division title.
