TinCaps Topple Cubs, 6-3, Before Massive Crowd

Tidwell Provides Fireworks in July 4 Win
July 4, 2016

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Kodie Tidwell launched a 440-foot home run, and the TinCaps defeated the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs), 6-3, on Monday night.

In front of 9,026 fans-the third-largest crowd in Parkview Field history-Fort Wayne (5-7, 41-41) tallied a trio of two-run innings to knock off division-leading South Bend (9-3, 50-31).

Tidwell opened the scoring during the bottom of the first frame, leading off with a single and scoring on double from Carlos Belen, who came around on Brad Zunica's RBI single.

The Cubs responded with three runs (two earned) in the second inning, but TinCaps starter Jerry Keel (W, 5-7) settled into a groove after the blemish. He notched a career-best eight strikeouts during six innings of work.

Tidwell led off the third frame with his fourth homer of the season, and Ruddy Giron later added a two-out RBI single that plated Zunica and gave Fort Wayne a 4-3 edge.

In the fourth inning, Belen and Zunica ripped consecutive RBI singles, both registering their 38th RBIs of the season.

Elvin Liriano (S, 1) recorded his first save of the year after throwing three scoreless and hitless frames.

Overall, the TinCaps smacked 16 hits. Belen had a season-high four, while Tidwell went 3-for-3 and also walked twice. Zunica singled three times.

Cubs starter Carson Sands (L, 6-2) allowed four runs in 2.2 innings.
