TinCaps Split Twinbill with Dragons

DAYTON, Ohio - The Fort Wayne TinCaps pulled out a sixteen-inning win in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday night against the Dayton Dragons, and early Wednesday morning dropped the back end at Fifth Third Field.

In a four-hour, twenty-two minute contest in game one, the TinCaps defeated the Dragons by the score of 3-1. After scoring on a Casey McElroy sacrifice fly in the first inning, Fort Wayne did not score again until Austin Hedges hit an RBI double in the top of the 16th inning. Corey Adamson added another RBI on a groundout to give Fort Wayne an insurance run.

The lone Dayton run came across on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Juan Silva in the third inninng. The two teams endured 12 scoreless frames from the third inning until the Fort Wayne runs in the 16th.

Jace Peterson went 5-8 in the win, as the TinCaps totaled 60 at bats on the evening and won their fourth game in a row. It was the longest game of the year for either Fort Wayne or Dayton. The TinCaps went 2-18 with runners in scoring position and stranded 15 runners on base. Dayton went 0-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight men on base.

James Needy (1-0) earned the win in relief, throwing a scoreless 14th, 15th and 16th innings. El'Hajj Muhammad (1-0) took the loss, also working the 14th, 15th and 16th.

In game two, the Dragons pulled out the win, 4-2 in seven innings. The TinCaps scored on an RBI single by Duanel Jones to make it 1-0 in the second inning. In the bottom of that inning, Dayton's Steve Selsky hit a two-run shot to left, making it 2-1 in favor of the Dragons. Fort Wayne scored again in the third, tying the game at two, but would never lead.

Selsky picked up an RBI on a groundout in the fourth, giving Dayton a 3-1 lead, and Juan Perez scored on a Duanel Jones error in the fifth to make the final advantage 4-2.

Justin Hancock took the loss in the second game, pitching five innings and surrendering four runs, three of them earned. The win went to Radhames Quezada, who tossed five innings and allowed just one earned run.

The TinCaps return home on Wednesday to open a three-game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks. The scheduled starters are Adys Portillo for Fort Wayne, and Jeff Shields for South Bend. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM.
