Losing streak ends, but so does Tapia's hitting streak

August 2, 2013

It was a good news, bad news situation Friday at Brent Brown Ballpark. The good news was that the Grand Junction Rockies ended their six game losing streak with a 4-3 10 inning win over the Orem Owlz. The bad news is that Raimel Tapia's club record 29 game hitting streak came to an end.

Tapia's streak began on June 28th against the Owlz, but on Friday night he went 0-for-4 with a walk. He was just three games shy of tying Chris Valaika's Pioneer League record set in 2006.

The Rockies led 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Owlz tied the game when Tapia had a fly ball pop out of his glove with two and the tying run on second base. With the winning run then on second base, Scott Firth was able to get Ranyelmy Mendoza to ground out on a comebacker to send the game to the tenth.

Robbie Perkins, who had singled in the tenth, scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Both teams traded zeroes until Zach Osborne singled home Ryan Garvey with two out in the third, giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead, but Mark Shannon answered with a home run in the bottom of the inning to tie it.

It stayed tied until the bottom of the fifth when the Owlz took advantage of a walk and broken bat single to their eight and nine hitters. Shannon gave them the lead with a sacrifice fly, but there lead didn't last long.

Correlle Prime started the seventh inning with a home run, tying the game at two. Jordan Patterson was hit by a pitch and he got to third when Jose Briceno singled. Patterson gave the Rockies the lead when he scored on a wild pitch.

Zach Jemiola started for the Rockies and allowed just two runs in six innings, he struck out six and walked two. Billy Waltrip tossed a scoreless seventh inning, while Carlos Yan worked around a two out walk to keep Orem off the board in the eighth. Angel Lezama worked a perfect 10th inning to earn his first save.

Jose Briceno had two hits, he has now hit in 16 straight games.

Saturday night, the Rockies and Owlz will conclude their two game series in the last game of the Rockies six game road trip. First pitch from Brent Brown Ballpark will be at 7:05 with Joel Payamps starting against Victor Alcantara.
