Pelicans' skid continues with 5-2 loss

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (74-60, 34-31), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, lost their sixth straight game Tuesday, falling 5-2 against the Wilmington BlueRocks at Frawley Stadium. The Pelicans are two losses shy of matching their longest losing streak of the season and are winless on the current six-game road trip.

Right-hander Angel Baez (3-1) earned the win , firing six scoreless innings with just one hit allowed. Nick McBride (0-5) was hit with the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits over 6.1 innings. Malcomb Culver tallied the final three outs and earned his fourth save of the season.

Joe Maloney supplied the offense for the Pelicans, lacing a two-run double into the left field corner in the seventh inning, pulling the Pelicans to within 3-2. He was subsequently thrown out trying to get to third base. The Pelicans had just one hit in the game entering the seventh inning. Drew Robinson set up the scoring rally with a leadoff triple. The BlueRocks pushed the deficit back to three with a two-run bottom of the seventh inning.

Royce Bolinger turned in a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-for-3.

Right-hander Michael Zouzalik entered in the seventh inning and would fire 1.2 scoreless innings.

Jack Lopez and Sam Bates each recorded two hits for Wilmington. Bates was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and another batted in. Lopez had an RBI single in the seventh inning.

The Pelicans and BlueRocks continue the three-game series Wednesday at Frawley Stadium. Right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-0, 3.60) will be opposed by righty J.C. Sulbaran (1-2, 5.65). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. EST with pregame coverage beginning at 6:20.
