Ports Blanked 11-0 To Wrap Up 2013

September 2, 2013

MODESTO, Calif. - The Modesto Nuts brought big time offense to the final game of the 2013 regular season. Modesto scored nine runs over the final three innings as the Stockton Ports were shut out 11-0 to wrap up the 2013 campaign. The Ports finish the season with a record of 69-71.

Modesto opened the scoring in the second inning with two runs off Ports starter Tanner Peters (12-8). Jared Simon doubled to start the inning, Trevor Story singled, and Jordan Ribera brought both runners in with a single to right. They were the only runs scored off Peters who suffered the loss after going four innings and allowing two runs on four this while striking out five.

After Trey Barham struck out the side in order in the fifth, Omar Duran took over in the sixth. Duran opened the inning with back-to-back walks and would give up a two-out RBI single to Jordan Ribera to make it a 3-0 Nuts lead.

Seth Frankoff came on to pitch the seventh inning and gave up a leadoff double to Tyler Massey. Two batters later, Matt Wessinger singled to center to make it 4-0. Ryan Casteel followed with an RBI single to left. After Frankoff hit Jared Simon, he got Story to fly to left for the second out. Ribera came up next with two away and singled to right to drive in another run. After Harold Riggins singled to load the bases, T.J. Walz was summoned from the Ports bullpen. Walz induced a grounder to third off the bat of Niko Gallego, but Tony Thompson's throw to first was low, an error that allowed another run to score and the inning to continue. Massey followed with his second double of the inning, good to drive in two more runs and stretch the Nuts lead to 9-0.

Frankoff went two-thirds of an inning and was charged with all six runs (three earned) that scored in the inning. Walz pitched the eighth and allowed two more runs on a two-out, two-run single by Riggins.

Nuts starter Ben Alsup (13-8) went six shutout innings and allowed three hits while striking out six as he picked up his 13th victory of the year and will finish the season as the league leader in that category.

Kraig Sitton, Nelson Gonzalez and Scott Oberg each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the ballgame for the Nuts, who finish the season with a record of 75-65.
