Rangers recognize four RoughRiders

Telis, Klein, Gallo and Gonzalez take home May honors
June 13, 2014

FRISCO, TEXAS (JUNE 13, 2014) - The Texas Rangers announced their minor league award winners for the month of May and four RoughRiders received recognition. The Rangers tabbed right-handed pitcher Phil Klein its Reliever of the Month and Tomás Telis its Defender of the Month for their stellar work with the 'Riders in May. Joey Gallo (Player of the Month) and Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez (Pitcher of the Month) garnered accolades for their work with Advanced-A Myrtle Beach.

Klein, 25, earns his first organizational award and converted six saves in as many opportunities during the month of May. The 2014 Texas League Midseason All-Star owns a 0.89 ERA through 30 1/3 innings pitched this season with eight saves and just three runs allowed on 15 hits.

Telis, who turns 23 on June 18, earns his second Defender of the Month award in the Rangers' farm system (April 2013). The two-time Texas League Midseason All-Star started 14 games behind the plate for the 'Riders in May and has thrown out 27.3% of would-be basestealers this season. He ranks second in the Texas League with a .326 batting average through 48 games in 2014.

Gallo, 20, is now the Minor League Player of the Month for the third consecutive time dating back to last season. Through 28 games in May, the lefty batted .326 with four doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 26 RBI, 26 walks, and 26 runs scored. He was promoted to Frisco on June 8 and through four games with the RoughRiders is batting 5-for-14 with five runs, a double, three home runs, seven RBI, three walks and six strikeouts. The native of Henderson, Nevada leads the minors with 24 home runs this season.

Gonzalez, 22, did not lose a decision in May and posted a 4-0 record with a 1.59 ERA for the Pelicans in the Carolina League. The 2014 Midseason All-Star made his RoughRiders debut on June 10 and pitched five scoreless innings and conceded one hit with no walks and six strikeouts in a win over Midland.

The quartet joins right-handed pitcher Matt West on the list of RoughRiders recognized by the Rangers as minor league players of the month in 2014. West was named the Reliever of the Month in April for his work with Frisco.

The RoughRiders can clinch their eighth playoff berth in franchise history with a win over the Corpus Christi Hooks on Friday night. Frisco next returns to Dr Pepper Ballpark on Wednesday, June 25 to open a six-game homestand.
