Rienzo Recalled to Chicago on Thursday

July 24, 2014

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- RHP Andre Rienzo (1-2, 3.60), who was originally scheduled to start tonight's game for the Charlotte Knights, was recalled to the Chicago White Sox today. Rienzo was recalled to replace RHP Zach Putnam, who was placed on Chicago's 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

This is the second promotion of the year for Rienzo. The 26-year-old right-hander was recalled back on April 19 and posted a 4-5 record with a 5.87 ERA in 14 games (11 starts) with the White Sox earlier this season. He made his Major League debut with Chicago last season (July 30, 2013) -- becoming the first-ever Brazilian-born pitcher in a Major League game. He became just the second-ever Brazilian-born player in the majors (Yan Gomes of Cleveland was the first).

In all, 12 Knights have gone from Charlotte to Chicago this season. RHP Jake Petricka (April 4), outfielder Jordan Danks (April 10), RHP Zach Putnam (April 17), RHP Andre Rienzo (April 19), LHP Charlie Leesman (April 22), RHP Scott Carroll (April 27), LHP Frank De Los Santos (May 3), RHP Frank Francisco (May 10), RHP Javy Guerra (May 20), LHP Eric Surkamp (June 26), infielder Carlos Sanchez (July 13), and RHP Taylor Thompson (July 20) are the players that have earned promotions in 2014.

Starting for the Knights tonight in Indianapolis will be RHP Matt Zaleski (0-0, 3.45) who will make the 73rd start of his Knights career, which will tie Charlie Haeger for the most games started in Knights franchise history. This is Zaleski's third start of the season and eighth appearance of the year since being activated off the DL on June 12. He is second all-time in Charlotte Knights franchise history in innings pitched (416.2). A native of Arlington Heights, Illinois, the 2014 season is the sixth for Zaleski as a member of the Knights. He has 19 wins in his Knights career (tied for 9th) and ranks fifth all-time in franchise history in strikeouts (274).

RHP Nick Kingham (4-1, 2.00) gets the nod for Indianapolis in tonight's finale as the Knights go for the series sweep. The Knights have won eight of their last nine games. Pre-game radio coverage of tonight's 7:05 p.m. game begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM, WRHI (94.3 FM and 1340 AM) and online at www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
