Outfielder Nick Williams promoted to Frisco

Drew Robinson to disabled list
August 15, 2014

TULSA, OKLAHOMA (AUGUST 15, 2014) - Today the Texas Rangers announced the promotion of outfielder Nick Williams to the Frisco RoughRiders from Advanced-A Myrtle Beach. In a corresponding move, outfielder Drew Robinson has been placed on the seven-day disabled list.

This marks the first promotion to Double-A for Williams, 20, a second round draft pick by the Rangers in 2012. The left-handed batter and thrower was a mid-season Carolina League All-Star and was one of the brightest stars on a playoff-bound Pelicans club. In 94 games for Myrtle Beach, Williams batted .292 (110 for 377) with 28 doubles, four triples, 13 home runs, 68 RBI, 61 runs scored, five steals, .343 on-base percentage, .491 slugging percentage and .834 OPS. He departs the CL ninth in batting average, tied for fourth in RBI, second in slugging, third in extra-base hits (45), third in total bases (185) and fifth in best HR/AB ratio (1/29.00). Williams entered the season ranked as the Rangers' third-best prospect by Baseball America and fourth-best according to MLB.com. He was also rated among the top 100 prospects in all of Minor League Baseball by Baseball America (97) and Baseball Prospectus (88).

A native of La Marque, Texas, Williams was drafted by Texas out of Galveston Ball High School, where he batted .422 with 25 steals in his senior season. He eschewed a commitment to play at Texas A&M University to sign with the Rangers and after hitting .313 for the AZL Rangers in 2012, he was a post-season South Atlantic League All-Star in 2013. As a member of the Hickory Crawdads, Williams hit .292 with 19 doubles, 12 triples (matching a club record), 17 home runs and 60 RBI in 95 games.

In 96 games with Frisco, Robinson is batting .190 with 15 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs and 40 RBI.

The RoughRiders begin a three-game series at Tulsa tonight and return home for a four-game series with San Antonio on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. For tickets and information on how to see the RoughRiders in 2014, please call (972) 731-9200, e-mail [email protected] or visit www.RidersBaseball.com.
