Hillcats Win Rain-Shortened Game, 2-0

August 23, 2014

Lynchburg snapped its eight-game losing streak after claiming a rain-shortened victory against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, 2-0 after six innings, in front of 3,975 fans on Fan Appreciation Night at Calvin Falwell Field.

Lynchburg scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. Kevin Ahrens opened the frame with his league-leading 38th double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Eric Garcia. Emerson Landoni walked with two outs to put runners on the corners. Johan Camargo hit a groundball to shortstop, and a fielding error by Luis Mendez allowed everybody to reach safely, including Ahrens as the first run of the contest. Two batters later, Blake Brown drove in Landoni.

Blair Walters (5-1) earned the victory after 5.1 shutout innings. He struck out a season-high eight while allowing four hits and four walks. Brady Feigl entered in the sixth with two runners on and recorded the final two outs of the inning to preserve the lead for his first save. Chad James (4-3) took the loss after surrendering the two unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

Walters began racking up the strikeouts early, as he struck out the side in the first and ended the second inning with another to give him four punchouts through two frames. Walters worked a perfect fourth inning with three consecutive strikeouts and notched his final strikeout to end the fifth.

Yenier Bello went 1-for-2 in his Hillcats debut, while Sean Godfrey registered his first hit at the Advanced-A level.
