Joe Mikulik and Jason Wood promoted in Rangers system

Former Pelicans skippers move up in Texas' organization ladder
December 4, 2014

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (DEMEMBER 4, 2014) - The Texas Rangers announced on Thursday that each of the last two managers of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans have been promoted to new posts. The Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Rangers, have announced that Joe Mikulik, who managed the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in 2014, will be their next manager. Mikulik takes over the post vacated by another former Pelicans manager, Jason Wood, who was promoted to the managerial role of the Rangers Triple-A Round Rock Express. Wood spent one year with RoughRiders after three postseason appearances with the Pelicans in his three years on the Grand Strand.

Mikulik led the Pelicans for just a single season but helped the club to their first Mills Cup Championship Series berth since 2008. He continued the streak of consecutive postseason appearances for Myrtle Beach to four, as his team won both the first and second half in the Carolina League, also a first for the franchise since 2008. His .594 winning percentage (82-56) is the best mark for any manager in Myrtle Beach Pelicans history, besting inaugural manager Brian Snitker (.571, 1999-2001). The Weimer, Texas product enters his 17th season as a minor league manager and captured his 1000th managerial win in a 7-5 extra-innings victory on May 10 over the Potomac Nationals.

Wood led the Pelicans to three consecutive winning seasons from 2011-2013, compiling his best season in 2013, when the club went 77-62. Myrtle Beach fell in the Southern Division Championship Series in each of the last three years. Last season, the former Major Leaguer took the helm of the RoughRiders, managing them to a Texas-league best 80-59 record, first and second half South Division championships, and a postseason trip. Wood's RoughRiders fell to the Midland RockHounds in the first round of the Texas League playoffs. As the new skipper of the Express, Wood begins a stint with his third different team at three different levels in his five-year managerial career.

The Pelicans return to TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark in 2015, as they look to defend their Southern Division Championship Title. The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
