Matt Davidson Blasts Knights Past Bulls in 3-2 Victory

April 22, 2015

(Durham, NC) -- Charlotte third baseman Matt Davidson launched his third home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning on Wednesday night to break a 2-2 tie in Durham. The Knights (8-5) were able to hang on to that 3-2 lead and take game three of the series from the Bulls (6-8), snapping a two-game skid.

The Knights were able to get on the 'board in the top of the fourth inning, with Carlos Sanchez starting the frame with a lead-off double. The speedy Sanchez later scored from third on a wild pitch by Bulls starter RHP Matt Buschmann (1-1, 2.75) that trickled only a few feet from catcher Luke Maile.

Dan Black pushed the advantage to 2-0 later in the inning with an RBI-single that scored Davidson. The 27-year-old switch hitter now has at least one RBI in four of his six games started this season.

Bulls DH J.P. Arencibia cut the Knights lead in half with one swing in the bottom of the fifth inning, sending a solo shot over the wall in straight-away center field.

Scott Carroll (1-1, 2.45) was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam later in the inning by getting Eugenio Velez to ground into a double play to end the frame with the Knights still ahead 2-1.

Maile led-off the inning with a ground-rule double off of LHP Zach Phillips that found its' way into the Durham bullpen down the right-field line. The Bulls catcher then scored on an Alexi Casilla single to tie the game at two.

RHP Arcenio Leon relieved Phillips in the eighth inning and worked his way around a Mikie Mahtook double to keep the game tied at two. Leon would be credited with the win in the game, his first of the season.

Knights closer RHP Jairo Asencio took the mound in the ninth, allowing one walk and no hits to earn his International League-leading fifth save of the season.

The Knights will look to split the four game series with a win in the Thursday night finale at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with RHP Erik Johnson (2-0, 1.13) facing off against LHP Scott Diamond (0-0, 2.00).
