Junior Guerra Promoted to Chicago, Blake Smith Promoted to Charlotte

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - RHP Junior Guerra, who struck-out 40 batters over 30.0 innings this season with the Charlotte Knights, had his contract purchased by the Chicago White Sox today. Guerra becomes the sixth Charlotte Knights player to earn a promotion to Chicago this season. Taking the roster spot of Guerra on Charlotte's active roster will be RHP Blake Smith, who was promoted to the Knights from Double-A Birmingham today.

Guerra, 30, was 0-3 with a 3.00 ERA in seven games (five starts) for the Knights this season. He was signed by the Chicago White Sox as a free agent on October 28, 2014. The Venezuelan native began the 2015 campaign with Double-A Birmingham and posted a 2-3 record with a 2.29 ERA in five games (three starts). In 19.2 innings pitched with the Double-A Barons this season, Guerra struck-out 26 batters.

Before this season, Guerra spent the previous six seasons (2009 to 2014) out of affiliated baseball. The San Felix, Venezuelan native played for La Guaira (Venezuelan Winter League), Wichita (Independent League), and Leones de Yucatan (Mexican League). The 30-year-old made his professional debut in 2006 with the GCL Braves - appearing in 14 games before moving through Atlanta's system that season. He spent the 2008 season through four levels in the New York Mets organization.

Smith, 27, appeared in four games for the Barons this season and compiled a 1-0 record with a 4.26 ERA (6.1 innings pitched). Smith, a native of Modesto, CA, was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 23, 2015 in return for Charlotte Knights LHP Eric Surkamp. In 15 games this season with Double-A Tulsa, Smith was 0-3 with a 1.62 ERA (16.2 innings pitched). The 6'2", 225-pound right-handed reliever was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 2nd round of the 2009 draft out of the University of California, Berkely as an outfielder.

Guerra is the fifth Knights pitcher to earn a promotion to Chicago this season. LHP Carlos Rodon (April 20), RHP Scott Carroll (April 26), RHP Daniel Webb (April 26), and RHP Chris Beck (May 9) are the other hurlers to earn a promotion to the White Sox this year. Infielder Carlos Sanchez was promoted to Chicago on May 15.

The Knights conclude their three-game series against the Norfolk Tides today at 2:05 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. Gates open at 1:00 p.m. and fans can expect another great Sunbelt Family Sunday, presented by Sunbelt Rentals. The Knights will welcome 92-year-old marathon runner Harriette Thompson, a Charlotte native, to BB&T Ballpark to throw out the game's ceremonial first pitch.
