June 11, 2015

PEARL, MS -- Coming off a near-perfect game in his last start, Jake Brigham held the Biloxi Shuckers to just two hits over eight innings to lead the Mississippi Braves to a 5-1 victory Thursday evening at Trustmark Park. The series continues Friday at 7:00 PM.

Brigham (6-2) allowed one earned run, walked two and struck out five to pick up the win. Mississippi (32-27) scored five runs on eight hits. Biloxi (36-24) plated one run on three hits. Mallex Smith and Rio Ruiz both posted two-hit nights at the plate. Smith added two RBIs.

After a one hour and 32 minute delay to start the game, the M-Braves and Shuckers got under way in game one of the five-game series. Biloxi took an early 1-0 lead in the first. Nathan Orf walked and Josh Fellhauer singled to put runners at the corners. An Orlando Archia ground out allowed Orf to score the game's first run.

Ruiz doubled and took third on a ground out. He then came in to score on Eric Garcia's single to left field, tying the game at 1-1.

Ruiz led off the fourth with another double to left field. Matt Kennelly and Garcia drew back-to-back walks to load the bases before Matt Lipka delivered a sacrifice fly to right field. Smith later delivered a two-run triple to make it 4-1. Emerson Landoni followed with a RBI-single to extend the Braves lead to 5-1.

Tyler Wagner (5-2) tossed six frames for the Shuckers, giving up five earned runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out six batters and took the loss.

Mark Lamm worked the final frame for the M-Braves.

In game two of this five-game series, the M-Braves send right-hander Greg Ross (2-5, 5.30) to the hill against Shuckers' righty Jorge Lopez (3-2, 3.38). First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
