TinCaps Take Finale at West Michigan

Pitching Prevails in 4-1 Victory
June 18, 2015

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. -- Splendid pitching led Fort Wayne to a 4-1 victory in its series finale against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark. On just three days rest, starter Chris Huffman (W, 3-3) tossed five innings allowing just one unearned run, and relief pitcher Yimmi Brasoban followed with three sterling innings of shutout baseball. Closer Colby Blueberg than closed the door in the ninth to secure his team-leading seventh save of the year.

The TinCaps avoided the sweep and head back to Parkview Field to finish the first half of the season against the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

The visitors jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ruddy Giron walked to start the game against right-hander Artie Lewicki (L, 0-2). Midwest League All-Star Nick Torres followed with a single and then Trae Santos grounded out to the shortstop Garrett Mattlage that plated Giron.

Fort Wayne (29-36) added two more in the next inning. Michael Gettys scored from third base on a failed pick-off move, and next, Jose Ruiz drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

West Michigan (32-34) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 3-1 game, but the TinCaps answered right back in the sixth. Santos began the inning with a single. Two errors from reliever Gage Smith allowed Santos to advance to third base and then home to put his team back in front by three runs.

In total, eight TinCaps hitters had base hits. The team is back at Parkview Field on Friday to begin a three-game series with the Hot Rods. The pitching probables are Michael Kelly (2-1, 6.00) for Fort Wayne and Greg Harris (3-4, 4.28) for Bowling Green. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game can be seen on Comcast Network 81 starting at 7:00 p.m. and heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app starting at 6:45 p.m.
