Coats' Clutch Double Completes Knights Comeback Victory

July 22, 2015

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Jason Coats continued his impressive Triple-A debut season with a four-RBI performance on Wednesday night; including a tiebreaking, two-RBI double in the eighth inning of the Charlotte Knights 6-4 victory over their in-state rival the Durham Bulls. The Knights have won four consecutive games and remain in first place of the International League South Division by a half-game over the Norfolk Tides. The Bulls have lost three straight - all to the Knights - and are now a season-high seven games out of first place.

Coats began the season in Double-A Birmingham, and since arriving in Uptown Charlotte, the Texas native hasn't stopped hitting. The 25-year-old outfielder made his Triple-A debut on April 23rd, and since that date, he leads all International League hitters with 61 RBIs. His RBI total ranks third in the IL for the season, five behind league-leader Jesus Aguilar of the Columbus Clippers.

After falling behind 4-0, Trayce Thompson put the Knights on the 'board with a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning. The homer was Thompson's 12th of the season and 100th of his career. Matt Tuiasosopo - who scored on the play - tallied his 100th career home run on Friday, one of four homers in a span of five days for the 12-year veteran.

The Knights tied the game 4-4 in the following inning on Coats' first of two RBI-doubles. The TCU product now owns a stellar .344 batting average with men in scoring position, including seven doubles and a pair of home runs in those situations.

The two International League home run leaders added to their resumes on Wednesday as J.P. Arencibia and Richie Shaffer each tallied long balls for the Bulls. Shaffer - a Charlotte native -launched his 16th long ball of the season to give Durham a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. He remains tied with Jason Martinson of the Syracuse Chiefs for second-highest total in the International League.

The highest home run total in the league belongs to Arencibia, who became the first IL player to reach the 20 homer mark with his two-run shot in the third inning that gave Durham a 4-0 lead.

Knights reliever Jarrett Casey earned his ninth win of the season after tossing two scoreless innings in relief of Scott Carroll. Casey is now tied with Bulls left-hander Scott Diamond for the highest win total in the International League.

Onelki Garcia came on to spin a scoreless ninth frame to seal the Knights come-from-behind victory and earn his third save of the season. Garcia is one of nine different Charlotte pitchers to record a save this season.

The Knights will look for a four-game sweep of the Bulls in Thursday night's 7:05 p.m. matchup. Hector Noesi will make his third appearance for the Knights on "Thirsty Thursday" against Bulls right-hander Matt Andriese.
