CURVE, Pa. -- The Altoona Curve surrendered twelve unanswered runs and lost a five-run lead against the Binghamton Mets in an 13-6 loss at Peoples Natural Gas Field on Tuesday night. Jose Osuna homered and drove in four runs.
With the loss to the Mets (63-51), the Curve fell back to third place in the Western Division for the first time since April 13, five days into the season.
The Curve took a 6-1 lead through four innings, but the Mets fought back and eventually took a 7-6 lead with a two-run homer by Brock Peterson in the seventh.
Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Rob Scahill (right forearm) started the game on a rehab assignment, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing two hits.
Altoona took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single by Osuna. Mel Rojas Jr. added a run with an RBI triple in the third.
After a sacrifice fly by Barrett Barnes scored a run in the fourth, Osuna followed it by slamming a three-run homer to put the Curve ahead, 6-1.
Binghamton would come back to score three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings against Jason Creasy (Loss, 8-7).
In the ninth inning, the Mets brought ten batters to the plate while scoring five runs.
Mets reliever Adam Kolarek (Win, 2-1) pitched a scoreless sixth inning to get the win, while Jon Velasquez (Save, 16) worked the eighth and ninth.
T.J. Rivera finished 4-for-6 with two solo home runs and a double, three runs scored and three RBI for Binghamton.
Altoona is now five-and-a half games behind the first-place Bowie Baysox and one game behind Akron RubberDucks for the second playoff spot in the Western Division.
The Curve and the Mets play the second of the three-game series on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Right-hander Chad Kuhl (8-4, 2.80) makes his 22nd start on the year for Altoona. Righty Gabriel Ynoa (8-7, 3.66) takes the mound for Binghamton.
It will be Wing and Wine Wednesday, featuring .50-cent wings and wine specials on the concourse during the game. It also will be 4-Pack Wednesday, presented by WALY 103.9, and fans can get four tickets, four hot dogs and four regular sodas for as low as $39.
