Clean Sweep! Knights Beat the G-Braves 3-1 on Wednesday

August 26, 2015

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - RHP Hector Noesi tossed six shutout innings, Jason Coats and Dayan Viciedo homered, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Gwinnett Braves 3-1 on Wednesday to earn a three-game series sweep at BB&T Ballpark. With the win, the Knights are now 1.5 games behind the G-Braves for second place in the IL South Division and 4.5 games behind first place Norfolk.

After beginning the season with the Chicago White Sox, Noesi (2-4, 3.81) has made eight starts with the Knights this season. His start on Wednesday was one of his finest yet. The Dominican native gave up just four hits and one walk on the evening. He threw 75 pitches, 51 for strikes.

The Knights scored all three of their runs against Gwinnett starter Kanekoa Texeira (6-4, 3.68), who was saddled with the loss. The former Chicago White Sox farmhand allowed three runs, four walks, and four hits over 5.1 innings pitched. The Hawaiian native allowed two home runs in the sixth inning.

Coats, who entered the game in a tie for third place in the International League in RBIs, launched the first of Charlotte's two home runs on the night. The TCU product's solo home run in the sixth was his 16th home run of the season, which put the Knights up by a score of 2-0 at that point. The RBI for Coats was his 77th of the year with the Knights and 79th overall (also had two with Double-A Birmingham earlier this season). Coats is now one RBI away from recording 80 on the season for a third consecutive year.

Later in the sixth inning, Viciedo ripped his fifth home run with the Knights in 2015 to make it a 3-0 lead at that point. The home run was his 45th as a member of the Knights, which ranks seventh all-time in franchise history. Viciedo is now batting .315 with five home runs and 12 RBIs in 24 games with the Knights this season.

The G-Braves added their only run of the game in the top of the eighth inning off White Sox reliever Daniel Webb, who continued his major league rehab assignment on Wednesday. Webb hit Mallex Smith with a pitch and then allowed a single to Eury Perez, which put runners on the corners with just one out. Two batters later, a wild pitch scored Smith, which made it a 3-1 ballgame at that point. That was all Gwinnett could muster in the finale however.

Charlotte reliever Terance Marin recorded the final four outs to earn his first save of the season. Marin struck-out three batters, including two in the top of the ninth inning.

The Knights, who finished 4-3 on the seven-game homestand, will now move on and make the trek to Durham, NC to open a four-game series against the Durham Bulls. RHP Kyle Drabek (7-8, 3.36) will get the start for the Knights against Durham LHP Scott Diamond (10-5, 3.75) in the opener. Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN 730 AM and www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
