Mayfield's homer sends Hooks over Riders

Corpus Christi finishes sweep over Frisco with 4-2 win
September 4, 2015

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (September 4, 2015) - Jack Mayfield hit a two-run home run in the fourth to give the Corpus Christi Hooks the lead for good as they defeated the Frisco RoughRiders, 4-2, on Friday night at Whataburger Field. The Riders struggled with runners in scoring position, going one-for-11 in the contest.

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Mayfield hit a pitch from Frisco starter Phil Irwin off the left field foul pole for a two-run homer to give the Hooks a 3-1 advantage.

Frisco started the scoring in the second inning. Trever Adams knocked a two-out homer over the left field wall to put the Riders on top 1-0.

Corpus Christi answered with a run in the third. Teoscar Hernandez singled and stole second base to get in to scoring position. Colin Moran followed with a RBI-single to tie the contest.

Roberto Pena homered for the first time this season in the seventh inning. The long ball gave the Hooks a 4-1 lead.

Frisco got one run back in the eighth but Jandel Gustave squandered an even bigger opportunity for the Riders. After Luis Mendez scored on a single from J.T. Wise, a two-out walk to Adams loaded the bases. Kellin Deglan stepped in and flied out to right to end the inning with the Riders trailing 4-2.

Phil Irwin (0-3)dropped the decision over five innings of work. The right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits, but struck out seven. Corpus Christi starter Chris Devenski received a no-decision in his four-inning outing. The righty allowed two runs and two hits while striking out five.

Brian Holmes (6-6) notched his sixth win in two scoreless innings of relief for the Hooks. The lefty gave up one hit and struck out two. Gustave worked two innings for his 20th save in 2015.
