April 15, 2016

ZEBULON, N.C. - (April 15, 2016) - Max Povse struck out seven and allowed only two hits over seven shutout innings Friday, leading the Carolina Mudcats to a 2-0 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at Five County Stadium.

Zack Bird and Chase Johnson-Mullins each worked a hitless inning of relief to seal the victory. Johnson-Mullins picked up the save.

The best opportunities for the Pelicans (3-6) to score came in the fifth and eighth innings. After Jeffrey Baez reached on an error in the fifth, he stole second base. With two outs and Baez running, Gioskar Amaya banked a single off the glove of the pitcher Povse. The second baseman Omar Obregon recovered the ball in front of second base and threw out Baez at the plate on a close call, maintaining the shutout for Carolina (6-3).

In the eighth, Bird walked two batters with two outs before getting Rashad Crawford to roll a weak grounder down the third base line. Bird barehanded the ball and threw out Crawford to keep the shutout going.

Trevor Clifton (0-2) started the game worked through three shutout innings for Myrtle Beach before allowing a one-out walk to Dansby Swanson in the fourth. Swanson stole second and with Amaya's throw sailing into centerfield, went to third base. Moments later, Clifton uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Swanson to score and make it 1-0.

In the fifth inning, Joseph Odom singled off of Clifton before advancing to second on a balk. After Clifton retired the next two, reliever Jordan Minch allowed Obregon to single and make it 2-0 Mudcats.

The Pelicans have now lost four games in a row, scoring just seven runs over that stretch.

Erick Leal (1-0, 5.40) will take the mound to try and break the streak on Saturday for the Pelicans, with Ryan Clark (0-1, 7.50) going for the Mudcats. The game can be heard beginning at 4:45pm on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and the TuneIn app.
