Clippers Walk-Off With 7-6 Win Wednesday

April 27, 2016

(COLUMBUS, OH) -- Giovanny Urshela's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Ronny Rodriguez from third base to break a 6-6 tie and lead the Columbus Clippers to a 7-6 walk-off win over the Charlotte Knights on Wednesday in the middle game of their three-game series. The win was the seventh straight for the Clippers.

The Knights battled back from a 6-2 deficit in the eighth inning with help from Daniel Fields. In the eighth, Charlotte scored four runs off reliever Jeff Johnson. Vinny Rottino started things off by drawing a key one-out walk. It was the first of three walks in the inning as Johnson proceeded to walk Danny Hayes and Jacob May to set the stage for Fields.

With the bases loaded and the Knights down by four runs in the eighth, Fields smashed a grand slam over the right center field fence to tie the game at 6-6. The long ball was the first of the season for Fields. It was Charlotte's second grand slam of the year. Hayes hit a walk-off grand slam on Friday, April 22.

With the game now knotted at 6-6, Charlotte reliever Michael Ynoa came on to keep the Clippers at bay. Ynoa did just that in the eighth inning, however he ran into troubles with the game tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth.

Jesus Aguilar doubled off Ynoa (0-2, 6.75) to begin the bottom of the ninth for the Clippers. Rodriguez, who eventually scored the game-winning run, came on to pinch run for Aguilar. Joey Butler then followed with a single and quickly took second base on defensive indifference to give the Clippers runners on second and third base with no outs. Ynoa then intentionally walked Robbie Grossman to load the bases for Urshela, who delivered the sac-fly RBI to lead Columbus to their second win of the series. Ynoa was saddled with his second loss of the year.

Columbus reliever Jordan Cooper (1-0, 5.40), who tossed a scoreless ninth inning, earned the win out of the bullpen.

Carlos Sanchez had a solid day at the plate and on the basepaths for the Knights. Sanchez finished the game 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and now leads the club with six stolen bases on the season. Hayes chipped in with two hits for the Knights.

RHP Jacob Turner started for the Knights and allowed four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings pitched. Turner, who tossed seven scoreless innings in his last outing, walked five and fanned four on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision.

Columbus starter TJ House allowed just two runs over five innings and left with a 4-2 lead. It was his fourth career start against the Knights. He's 0-3 all-time.

The Knights will conclude their three-game series against the Columbus Clippers (Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians) on Thursday at 11:35 a.m. from Huntington Park.
