Knights Drop Opener to 'Hens 9-6 in 11 Innings

April 29, 2016

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Toledo's Tyler Collins hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the 11th inning en route to a 9-6 extra-inning win over the Charlotte Knights in the opening game of their three-game series from BB&T Ballpark on Friday.

The two teams headed to the 11th inning tied at 6-6. Charlotte RHP Tyler Barnette (1-1, 6.43) allowed a leadoff triple to Chad Huffman to begin the 11th frame. Two batters later -- after a walk to Cameron Maybin - Huffman was tagged out when Dixon Machado hit into a fielder's choice. Still, the Mud Hens continued to threaten in the inning with two runners on base for Collins, who launched the game-winning blast - his first home run of the season with the Mud Hens.

Barnette, who pitched a scoreless 10th inning, was saddled with the loss after he allowed three runs (all in the 11th) on two hits over two innings of work.

Trailing 5-4 in the seventh, the Knights took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-run single by Danny Hayes. The lead didn't last long as the 'Hens came right back in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game at 6-6 on a Nate Schierholtz RBI single. The game went into extra innings and the 'Hens struck first in the 11th and held on for the win in the opener.

Charlotte starter Terance Marin allowed three runs on six hits over 5.1 innings and did not factor in the decision. Marin walked just one batter and struck-out seven in his third start of the season with the Knights.

Offensively for the Knights, J.B. Shuck went 3-for-6 with a double and a run scored. Jacob May chipped in with two hits including a triple.

Before the game, Charlotte announced a flurry of roster moves -- including their sixth player in six days to earn a promotion to Chicago. RHP Tommy Kahnle was recalled to Chicago, RHP Scott Carroll was activated off the disabled list, Marcus Lemon joined the team from Double-A Birmingham, and infielder/outfielder Leury Garcia was placed on the disabled list.
