Hens roll over Braves in game one win

May 2, 2016

The Mud Hens made their way to Coolray Stadium for their first road series of the year against the Gwinnett Braves Monday night. Toledo headed into the ballgame looking to hit the double-digit mark in wins, as Josh Turley took the hill for Lloyd McClendon's squad.

After going down in order in the first, Casey McGehee led off the second with a single to left. McGehee came all the way around to score on the next play, as Steven Moya struck his team leading seventh double of the season and the Hens were on the board 1-0. In the fourth Moya was at it again smashing an RBI single to center bringing home Tyler Collins, extending the lead to 2-0. The sweet swinging lefty also holds the Toledo lead for runs batted in with fifteen.

Josh Turley came into the night with a 1-2 record, looking to get back in the win column after earning a loss against the Braves in his last start. The crafty lefty cruised through the first three frames against the Braves' lineup unscathed. However, in the fourth the lefty found himself in a hole after surrendering three straight hits to Emilio Bonifacio, Rio Ruiz and Ryan Lavarnway. With no one out Turley buckled down and induced a fielder's choice and a sac fly, limiting the Gwinnett scoring damage to just two runs.

After chasing Gwinnett starter, Kanekoa Texeira the Hens' bats were up against a familiar face in the sixth, as former Mud Hen Ian Krol was summoned out of the Gwinnett bullpen. Krol was greeted by the heart of the Toledo order. The lefty got Tyler Collins to ground out for the first out of the inning, but followed it with a one out walk to Casey McGehee. Red-hot Steven Moya continued his quality night at the plate doubling to right field, sending McGehee to third. Krol was unable to escape the one out jam, as Chad Huffman sent a breaking ball down the right field line for a two RBI triple, as Toledo took back the lead, 4-2. Huffman came around to score on a Humberto Quintero single, propelling the lead to 5-2. Krol finished with a final line of 1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO.

Josh Turley was consistent with his arsenal of pitches all evening long as the Texarkana, TX native was relieved in the seventh, in line for the win. Turley's final line: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 S0.

Lloyd McClendon called for righty Preston Guilmet out of the Hen pen in the seventh. After back-to-back singles by Emerson Landoni and Levi Hyams, Guilmet found himself in a jam with no one out. Nevertheless, the veteran reliever was able to escape the threat retiring the next three Braves in a row and keeping the Toledo lead in tact. Logan Kensing shut the door in the final two frames for Toledo, recording six straight outs for the victory.

The Hit Men: The baseball looked more like a beach ball to Steven Moya and Chad Huffman Monday night against Gwinnett as the two Hens finished nearly perfect at the plate. Moya ended the evening 3-3 with 2 RBI, 1 walk and 2 runs scored. Huffman padded his .297 batting average with a 2-3 night at the plate with 2 RBI, 1 walk and 1 run scored.

The two teams are back at it again in game two on Tuesday at 7:05 PM, as Warwick Saupold takes the ball for Toledo.
