May 27, 2016

PEARL, MS -- Sean Newcomb held the Suns to one run on four hits, leading the Mississippi Braves to a 3-1 victory over Jacksonville at Trustmark Park Friday night. The series continues Saturday at 6:00 PM.

Mississippi (21-27) scored three runs on five hits. Jacksonville (22-25) plated one run on six hits. Levi Hyams collected a multi-hit game with two knocks including a long ball. Dansby Swanson entered Friday's game riding a 12-game hitting streak but went 0-for-4 at the plate.

The M-Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second. Carlos Franco doubled and moved to third on a ground out. He then came in to score on Matt Kennelly's double to left field, giving the Braves an early advantage.

Carlos Franco and Matt Kennelly both walked to start the Braves fourth. Dian Toscano then singled to drive home Franco and extend the Braves lead to 2-0.

Jacksonville made it a 2-1 game in the fifth. Sharif Othman and Avery Romero both singled and advanced on an Austin Brice sacrifice bunt. A fielder's choice cut down Othman at the plate but a double steal allowed Romero to swipe home and make it a one-run game.

Levi Hyams blasted a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, adding an insurance run and giving the Braves a 3-1 lead.

Sean Newcomb (2-2) held the Suns to one earned run on four hits and a walk. He struck out five in five innings of work to pick up the win. Danny Burawa worked two frames, allowing just one hit before handing the ball to Stephen Janas (S, 2) who tossed the final two innings and picked up his third save of the year.

Austin Brice (3-3) suffered the loss, giving up three earned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out five batters.

The M-Braves send right-hander Rob Whalen (2-4, 3.42) to the hill in game four of this five-game series against the Suns. He'll counter Jacksonville lefty Jarlin Garcia (1-2, 3.82). First pitch is slated for 6:00 PM. Gates open at 5:00 PM.
