June 22, 2016

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (June 22, 2016) - Former Myrtle Beach Pelicans reliever Gerardo Concepcion was called up to the Major Leagues and made his debut for the Chicago Cubs Tuesday at Wrigley Field. Concepcion is the 142nd former Pelican to reach The Show, the fifth to make his debut in 2016 and the first player to debut with the Cubs after having played with Myrtle Beach as a member of Chicago's organization.

Concepcion retired all four batters he faced, whiffing two of them in the Cubs' 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

In seven appearances out of the bullpen with the Pelicans in 2015, Concepcion went 0-2 with a 3.55 ERA. The southpaw yielded nine hits in 12.2 innings with 14 strikeouts against eight walks before getting promoted to Double-A Tennessee on May 6 of that season.

The Havana, Cuba native did not allow a run in 17.2 frames over 10 appearances with the Smokies to begin the 2016 campaign. He earned a promotion on May 12 to Triple-A Iowa, where he went 1-0 with a 2.60 ERA. Concepcion fanned 17 against 10 walks in 17.1 innings over 12 games with the I-Cubs. Lefties hit .190 against him.

Concepcion is the fifth Myrtle Beach alumnus to climb to The Show for the first time in 2016. Catcher Brett Nicholas made his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers on April 11, before left-hander Cody Ege toes the rubber for the Miami Marlins on April 23. Right-hander Wilfredo Boscan and outfielder Jared Hoying made their debuts with the Pirates and Rangers, respectively, in May.

The Pelicans begin the second half of the season Thursday at 7:05 p.m. by beginning a four-game series with the Carolina Mudcats at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. One lucky dad will go home with a new recliner courtesy of Garden City Furniture as part of Father's Day Red emption Night. Thirsty Thursday also means $1.00 12 oz. Bud and Bud Light draughts and $2.00 16oz. cans from 6-8 p.m.
