Big innings send Riders to fourth straight win

Frisco scores seven runs in two innings, knocks off San Antonio
July 17, 2016

FRISCO, TEXAS (July 17, 2016) - On the strength of two big innings, the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, knocked off the San Antonio Missions 9-5 Sunday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark.

The RoughRiders (48-44 overall, 10-13 second half) erased an early 2-0 deficit with a four-run third inning. Lewis Brinson started the scoring with an RBI double. Ronald Guzman's triple tied the game, Ryan Cordell gave Frisco the lead with a double, and Joe Jackson added an insurance run with an RBI single to put the Riders up 4-2.

Frisco kept the hit parade rolling against Missions starter Tim Berry (0-1) in the fourth, capped by a two-run home run for Guzman, his third long ball in the last four games to put the Riders ahead 7-2. Guzman extended his hit streak to 16 games in Sunday's win, putting him one game behind Cordell's season-long 17-game streak from earlier this season.

Richelson Pena made the start for the RoughRiders in his return from Triple-A Round Rock and pitched well. The righty worked five innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out one to earn the win. Pena (2-0) worked in place of scheduled starter Luis Ortiz, who left with an apparent injury after throwing his warmup pitches just prior to the first inning.

San Antonio (32-61, 10-13) got four of its five runs on home runs from Franchy Cordero, Luis Tejada, and Gabriel Quintana.

The Riders continue the series against the Missions at Dr Pepper Ballpark Monday at 7:05 p.m.. Monday's game pits a pair of highly-rated prospects against one another, with left-hander Yohander Mendez (4-0, 3.38 ERA) working for Frisco against San Antonio righty Dinelson Lamet (2-4, 4.21 ERA).
