Pelicans pummel Winston-Salem 15-2

Myrtle Beach puts up back-to-back six-run innings in win
July 18, 2016

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 18, 2016) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans registered a pair of six-run innings in a 15-2 rout of the Winston-Salem Dash Monday at BB&T Ballpark.

Down 1-0 in the top of the second inning, David Bote drew a leadoff walk before Jeffrey Baez reached on an infield single two batters later. Erick Castillo then was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Andrew Ely followed and drove in Bote with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the score 1-1.

Charcer Burks then looped an infield single to second base, scoring Baez from second to give Myrtle Beach (49-46, 13-12) a 2-1 lead. After a walk to Daniel Spingola loaded the bases, Gleyber Torres lined a single to left, which was misplayed by Dash left fielder Nick Basto, allowing all three runs to score which gave the Pelicans a 5-1 advantage. The next batter was Yasiel Balaguert, who doubled to right to plate Torres and make it 6-1 Birds.

The Dash (39-55, 11-13) got a run back in the bottom of the second after a bases-loaded walk forced in a run to make the score 6-2.

Up by four in the top of the third, Baez singled with one out before Castillo reached on an error. From there, Ely, Burks and Spingola all beat out consecutive infield singles to make the score 8-2. Torres then walked with the bases loaded to push the score to 9-2. With the bases loaded and one out, Balaguert ripped a double into the left field corner to clear the bases and make the score 12-2, knocking out Dash starter Tanner Banks (4-2).

Still leading by that score in the fourth, Baez doubled to left before Burks doubled to the same spot three batters later to make the score 13-2.

Still up 11 in the top of the fifth, Torres lined a triple into the right field corner. Two batters later, a wild pitch brought in Torres to increase the advantage to 14-2. Bote then walked before Baez did the same. With runners at first and second and two outs, Castillo doubled to left to push across Bote and cap the scoring at 15-2.

Baez reached base in all six of his plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with two walks and three runs scored. Torres finished 4-for-5 on the night with two doubles, a triple, three runs scored, three RBI and a walk. Three other Pelicans recorded multi-hit games and four Birds had multi-RBI nights.

Pelicans starter Jonathan Martinez (7-5) shut down the Dash over his final four frames, finishing his six-inning day with four strikeouts and only one walk. He was charged with just one earned run on five hits.

The Pelicans will look to take three out of four from the Dash at noon on Tuesday. RHP Jeremy Null (2-4, 4.94 ERA) will start for the Pelicans against RHP Thad Lowry (6-6, 4.05 ERA) of Winston-Salem. Coverage begins at 11:45 a.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
