Knights Fall to RailRiders 14-2 Wednesday

July 20, 2016

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- A 12-run, 32-minute top of the sixth inning led the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to a 14-2 win over the Charlotte Knights on Wednesday in the finale of their three-game series from BB&T Ballpark. Despite the loss, the first place Knights won two of three games in the series against the team with the best record in Triple-A Baseball.

The Knights got off to a quick start on Wednesday and scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning with help from their first two batters. Adam Engel led the inning off with a double, which set the table for infielder Carlos Sanchez, who launched a two-run home run over the right field fence. The home run, his eighth of the season, gave the Knights a 2-0 lead.

With the early 2-0 lead, Charlotte starter Kameron Loe (0-2, 3.63) was cruising. The 34-year-old California native, who was making his fourth start of the season with the Knights, did not allow a hit over his first four innings of work. In the fifth, he gave up a single to Ike Davis, but continued to cruise. Charlotte possessed a 2-0 lead after five full innings on Wednesday and looked to earn the three-game series sweep. Things quickly changed in the top of the sixth inning, however.

Loe started the sixth inning off by allowing two consecutive hits. Before long, 11 hits, 12 runs, and just over 32 minutes later, the RailRiders had a 12-2 lead over the Knights. The inning was highlighted by a Gary Sanchez grand slam. Seven players on the RailRiders roster came to the plate twice in the inning, and the Knights used three pitchers to get out of the frame. Reliever Ryan Webb allowed four of the 12 runs without retiring a batter, while Terance Marin gave up three runs. Loe, who was saddled with the loss, was charged with five of the runs.

In all, Gary Sanchez led the way offensively for the RailRiders, who totaled 17 hits on the evening. Sanchez finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs scored, the grand slam, and four RBIs. Seven of the team's hitters had at least two hits, while Sanchez and Jose Rosario had three hits each.

The Knights, who fell to 45-54 on the season, remain a full game ahead of second place Durham in the International League South Division standings. Jerry Sands had two of Charlotte's seven hits on the night, while Carlos Sanchez led the way with his two-run home run -- the 344th hit of his Charlotte Knights career. He ranks third all-time in franchise history in hits.

The Knights will now hit the road and make the trek to Indianapolis, IN to open a four-game series against the Indianapolis Indians on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. from Victory Field. Pre-game radio coverage starts at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte 730 AM and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
