Marte delivers again, but Frisco's surge comes up short

Riders infielder drives in a pair, Carroll pitches well in Riders debut
July 22, 2016

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (July 22, 2016) - The Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, suffered a 4-3 defeat in game two of a four-game series against the Corpus Christi Hooks Friday night at Whataburger Field. The club scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning but came up just short, leaving the tying run on base.

For the second consecutive night, Luis Marte came through in the clutch for the RoughRiders (50-47 overall, 12-16 second half). He tied the game at 1-1 with a single in the fifth inning and followed up an RBI single from Ryan Cordell in the ninth inning with one of his own that got the Riders within a run at 4-3. Marte went 2-for-4 Friday, and all four of his hits in this series have brought in a run, and he has five RBI in total.

The Hooks broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning against reliever Jose Monegro to move ahead for good. A missed catch error by catcher Kellin Deglan allowed J.D. Davis to score on a two-out double from Danry Vasquez. Corpus Christi (60-38, 13-15) added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings with solo home runs from Nick Tanielu and Vasquez.

Frisco stayed in the game early thanks to a strong outing from Scott Carroll, making his Rangers organization debut after coming over from the White Sox organization Wednesday in a trade. Carroll worked five innings, allowing an earned run on just two hits, while walking two and striking out three in a no-decision. Carroll retired the final seven hitters he faced before giving way to Monegro (0-1), who suffered the loss.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa pushed his on-base streak to 21 games with a single in the fifth inning. Andy Ibanez (12 games) and Joe Jackson (11) also extended their on-base streaks. Ronald Guzman went 0-for-4 and had his 20-game on-base streak terminated.

The Riders aim to rebound against the Hooks in the third game of the four-game road series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Richelson Pena (2-0, 3.50 ERA) is set to start for the Riders against Corpus Christi's Keegan Yuhl (8-3, 3.05 ERA). Live coverage can be heard on the Frisco RoughRiders Radio Network, on the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App with the Dr Pepper Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m.

The RoughRiders return home to Dr Pepper Ballpark for a seven-game homestand against the San Antonio Missions and the Midland RockHounds beginning Thursday, July 28. The homestand is highlighted by Ghostbusters Tribute Night on Friday, July 29. On Saturday, July 30, the RoughRiders host Faith Night and will give away Bull Moose bobbleheads.
