Myrtle Beach rallies with four-run sixth for 10th straight win

Balaguert homers in 7-4 victory
August 9, 2016

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (August 9, 2016) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to rallying by the Salem Red Sox 7-4 to win their 10th game in a row Tuesday at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

With Salem (67-46, 24-20) leading 4-1 heading into the inning, the Pelicans got a pair of one-out walks from David Bote and Yasiel Balaguert. The next batter was Ian Rice, who dumped a single down the left field line off Red Sox starter Matt Kent to cut the deficit to 4-2.

After Kent was replaced by Yankory Pimentel (8-6), Jeffrey Baez lined a ground-rule double to right to make it 4-3. Bryant Flete followed and pounded a chopper off home plate. Pimentel fielded and pumped a throw to home before realizing Rice was already home. Pimentel then turned to first and his throw sailed down the right field line, allowing Baez to score on the error and give Myrtle Beach (64-51, 28-17) a 5-4 lead.

With the Pelicans still up by one in the bottom of the eighth, Balaguert launched a solo home run to left to extend the advantage 6-4. Rice then singled before Baez bunted him to second. Flete followed by singling to center to plate Rice and cap the scoring at 7-4.

Tommy Thorpe worked 1.2 scoreless innings to earn his sixth hold of the year. Ryan McNeil retired all four batters he faced to claim his league-leading 18th save of the season.

After Myrtle Beach starter Jake Stinnett (8-4) worked a perfect top of the first, Charcer Burks led off the bottom of the inning with a single to left. After advancing to second on a ground out, Balaguert drove him in with a two-out single to right, giving the Pelicans a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Mike Meyers singled before Danny Mars pushed him to third on a hit to right. Jordan Procyshen followed by flying out to center to score Meyers and tie the game at one.

Still tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth, Jose Sermo and Deiner Lopez both singled before Joseph Monge bunted them to second and third. Jayce Ray followed and lined a single up the middle to score the pair and make it 3-1 Salem. The next batter was Rafael Devers, who lined a ground-rule double to left to extend the Red Sox lead to 4-1.

The Pelicans' ten game winning streak is their longest since 2008. The Birds have won 16 of 19 games to get to a season-best 13 games over .500.

Myrtle Beach will look to extend their winning streak to eleven Wednesday night at 7 p.m. with RHP Trevor Clifton (6-7, 3.15 ERA) on the mound. LHP Trey Ball (5-5, 3.99 ERA) will pitch for Salem. All fans can enjoy BOGO Hebrew National hotdogs. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app, TuneIn and MiLB.tv.
