Knights Win Wild Game in 13 Innings, Beat the Bulls 4-3 on Sunday

August 14, 2016

(DURHAM, NC) -- Leury Garcia raced home on a wild pitch in the top of the 13th inning to score the go-ahead run and lead the Charlotte Knights to a 4-3 win over the Durham Bulls on Sunday from Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC. With the win, the Knights pulled to just 1.5 games back of the top spot in the International League South Division. The Gwinnett Braves, the leaders in the IL South Division, lost to the Louisville Bats by a score of 9-4 on Sunday. The Knights and G-Braves will face off five times over the next five days, starting with Monday's 7:05 p.m. contest at BB&T Ballpark.

Tied by a score of 3-3, the Knights and Bulls headed to extra innings. Neither team could score in the 10th, 11th, or 12th innings. In the 13th, the Knights finally got back on the scoreboard and did so with help from the speedy Garcia.

In the top of the 13th inning, Garcia ignited the offense with a leadoff single. Jason Bourgeois followed with a sacrifice bunt, which put Garcia into scoring position with just one out. After Kevan Smith drew a walk, the Knights had runners on first and second base with just one out. The red-hot Jerry Sands then stepped to the plate.

Sands, the hero of Saturday's game, had another chance to play the hero in the series. Before that, reliever Ryne Stanek uncorked a wild pitch, which put Garcia on third base and Smith on second base. With two runners now in scoring position, Stanek got the dangerous Sands to strike out for the second out of the inning. Still, the Knights were not done there.

For the second time in the top of the 13th inning, Stanek threw a wild pitch. This time, Garcia raced home to score the go-ahead run. At that point, the Knights took a 4-3 lead. It was one they would not relinquish.

In the bottom of the 13th inning, Charlotte LHP Matt Purke tossed a perfect inning to earn his first save of the season. Purke fanned two batters in the frame and helped lead the Knights to a series win over the Bulls. RHP Brad Goldberg (2-5, 3.38), who represented the Knights at the 29th Annual Triple-A Baseball All-Star Game in Charlotte earlier this year, earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings.

Coming off his nine-inning, three-hit shutout on Tuesday, RHP Terance Marin started and tossed five innings on Sunday. The California native allowed two runs on seven hits. Marin, who lowered his ERA to 4.97, did not factor in the decision.

Down by a score of 1-0 after three full innings, the Knights jumped out to a 3-1 lead after a three-run fourth inning. The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Nicky Delmonico. He finished the game 2-for-4 with the home run -- his fifth of the season. The Knights scored all three runs in the fourth frame off Durham starter Austin Pruitt, who pitched seven innings on Sunday.

Sunday's 13-inning affair was the longest of the season for the Knights. Their last 13-inning game took place on August 1, 2015 at Indianapolis.

The Knights will now head home to Uptown Charlotte to open a three-game series against the first place Gwinnett Braves on Monday at 7:05 p.m. from BB&T Ballpark. Pre-game radio coverage of Monday's opener starts at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte 730 AM and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time radio broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action.
