Knights Fall to the Bats 5-3 on Tuesday

August 30, 2016

(LOUISVILLE, KY) -- A four-run bottom of the fifth inning helped the Louisville Bats beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 5-3 on Tuesday from Louisville Slugger Field in Louisville, KY. Despite the loss, the Knights remained just a half-game back of the first place Gwinnett Braves in the International League South Division race. Gwinnett lost to the Norfolk Tides by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday.

Louisville RHP Daniel Wright (6-5, 6.13) gave up three runs on six hits over five innings and earned the win. It was Louisville's second in as many days against the Knights. Wright allowed an RBI single to Jacob May in the top of the fourth inning, which gave Charlotte a 1-0 lead over Louisville.

The Knights added to their 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a two-run home run off the bat of outfielder Jason Coats. The home run was the 10th of the season for Coats, who finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate. The former TCU standout raised his batting average to .331 through 72 games with the Knights this season. Nicky Delmonico extended his season-high hitting streak to 11-straight games with a single.

RHP Terance Marin (7-7, 5.00) started for the Knights and held Louisville scoreless over his first four innings of work. Marin, who tossed a complete game, nine-inning shutout the last time he faced the Bats (August 9), had his troubles in the fifth inning despite being staked to a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Louisville battled back and scored four runs against the Knights and Marin to take a 4-3 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Kyle Skipworth and an RBI triple by Juan Perez. In all, Marin allowed four runs on five hits in the inning.

The Bats tacked on one more run in the game and did so in the bottom of the eighth inning with help from the long ball. Third baseman Seth Mejia-Brean ripped a solo home run in the eighth off of Charlotte reliever Matt Purke. The home run pushed Louisville's lead to 5-3.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Knights rallied against the Louisville bullpen and put the tying run on first base after a Slade Heathcott walk and an Adam Engel single. With two outs and runners on first and second base, Louisville reliever Kevin Shackelford got Leury Garcia to ground into a game-ending double play. The loss was Charlotte's fourth over their last five games.

The Knights will conclude their three-game series against the Louisville Bats on Wednesday with a 7:05 p.m. game from Louisville Slugger Field. The Knights have just six games left to play in the 2016 regular season. Pre-game radio coverage on Wednesday starts at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte 730 AM and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
