Dragons Senzel Named #1 Prospect in Midwest League

October 3, 2016

Dayton, Ohio-Dayton Dragons third baseman Nick Senzel was named today as the #1 prospect in the Midwest League in 2016 by Baseball America, the trade publication for Minor League Baseball. Senzel was ranked first on a list of the top 20 prospects in the league. The 16-team Midwest League featured more than 600 players in 2016.

Senzel (sin-ZELL) was selected with the second overall selection in the first round of the 2016 draft by the Cincinnati Reds after playing college baseball at the University of Tennessee. He joined the Dragons on July 1st and appeared in 58 games with the Dragons, enjoying one of the most productive partial seasons in Dragons history. Senzel batted .329 with seven home runs and 36 runs batted in. He also added 23 doubles, three triples, and 15 stolen bases.

Senzel's 33 extra base hits in 58 games was the highest ratio of extra base hits per game in Dragons history (minimum of 50 games), topping the previous mark of Jay Bruce in 2006. Senzel's slugging percentage of .567 was 35 points higher than the league leader, though he did not reach the minimum number of plate appearances to qualify.

Baseball America offered this comment on Senzel:

"The most polished college bat in his draft class, Senzel advanced quickly to Dayton and has an above-average hit tool and plus raw power that could show up in games as he adds loft to his line-drive-geared bat path. His power is presently solid-average. Senzel has shown in batting practice the ability to drive the ball to the opposite field and over the fence. He has above-average bat speed with leverage and above-average pitch recognition."
