SALEM, Va. (May 20, 2017) Eloy Jimenez homered and drove in two, but the Salem Red Sox scored three in the sixth and five in the seventh on Saturday to race by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 9-2 at Haley Toyota Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
With the score tied at one, Jimenez bombed a solo home run to left to put the Pelicans (22-21) ahead 2-1. However, that was the lone blemish Salem (27-15) starter Matt Kent (3-2) would allow over the last five innings of his outing. Kent retired 15 of the final 16 Birds he faced, and yielded just two runs on three hits in seven innings to earn the win.

Myrtle Beach starter Ryan Kellogg ceded just one run on three hits in five frames. Reliever Casey Bloomquist (2-4) began the bottom of the sixth by inducing a ground out to second, but then Michael Chavis homered, his second shot of the contest, to tie the game. After another ground out to second, Trenton Kemp, who had a career-high four hits, singled. Mike Meyers did the same and Jordan Betts walked to loaded the bases. Jhon Nunez then beat out a slow chopper to bring in two runs, with Meyers sprinting in from second to give the Red Sox their first lead of the game at 4-2.
The score was the same when Steven Reveles walked to start the seventh. Chavis followed by doubling in Reveles. Josh Ockimey hit an RBI single to make it 6-2 and then Kemp doubled. The Pelicans brought in Kyle Miller, who gave up an RBI single to Meyers. After a Betts strikeout, a Nunez RBI ground out pushed the Salem advantage to 8-2. Bryan Hudson added one final punch in the frame with an RBI base hit to increase the lead to 9-2.
The Pelicans were able to strike first in the contest. Trent Giambrone singled and P.J. Higgins walked to begin the contest. A fielder's choice advanced both runners to scoring position before Jimenez drove in Giambrone with a ground out to third, putting the Birds ahead at 1-0.
The score would stay that way until Chavis launched an opposite field dinger in the fourth off of Kellogg, the southpaw's lone mistake of the night.
Sunday's 1:05 p.m. contest pits Myrtle Beach RHP Adbert Alzolay (3-1, 2.85 ERA) against Salem RHP Shaun Anderson (0-1, 10.50 ERA). Coverage begins at 12:50 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
