Fireflies Complete Sweep of GreenJackets

Fireflies Break Up Pitcher's Duel in Eighth

Augusta, GA-The Columbia Fireflies blew the game open with five runs in the top of the eighth inning. It turned out to be the only half-inning with any scoring on the night as the GreenJackets fell 5-0 to the Fireflies Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the GreenJackets as the Fireflies completed the three-game series sweep at the Lake.
Dan Rizzie drew a walk to lead off the top of the eighth for the Fireflies. Reed Gamache then reached on an error advancing Rizzie to third. Jay Jabs followed with a single to score Rizzie and break the scoreless tie. With one out and the bases loaded, J.J. Franco doubled home all three runners to make it 4-0 Fireflies. With two outs, Dash Winningham singled home Franco to put the game out of reach.
Domenic Mazza contributed six scoreless innings in his start for the GreenJackets. He struck out four, walked three, and allowed only six hits. Jose Medina was equally solid for the Fireflies. He also tossed six scoreless innings. He struck out five, walked four, and gave up only two hits.
The big difference in the game was the performance of Columbia's bullpen. Matt Pobereyko came on to begin the seventh and pitched a pair of shutout innings. Cameron Griffin followed with a scoreless ninth to close out the shutout.
The GreenJackets will be back in action Friday night against the Charleston RiverDogs at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. Caleb Baragar (4-7, 4.44) will start on the mound for the GreenJackets against Nick Green (4-4, 4.77) for the RiverDogs.
The next game at the Lake will be on Friday August 25th against the Greenville Drive. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm with the gates opening at 6:00pm. It is Ladies Night presented by The Walking Company, Tin Lizzy's Cantina, Brooks Haven Floral and Flowers LLC, Palm Beach Tan, Pure Barre Augusta, The Swank Company, Barefoot Wine and Refreshers, and Oliviana Ristorante. The first 1,000 fans into the stadium will receive a free Jon Lester bobblehead presented by SRP Federal Credit Union. Lester will also be inducted into the GreenJackets Hall of Fame before the game.
