Lynchburg Silences Myrtle Beach 3-0

The Pelicans tallied just two hits in the loss

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were held without a hit until the eighth inning as the Lynchburg Hillcats took Thursday’s game 3-0. The loss snaps the Birds’ three-game winning streak as they now stand at 6-11. The Hillcats improved to 9-9 with their first win of the series.

Chris Paciolla (1-3, 2B) broke up Lynchburg’s no-hitter with a double with one out in the top of the eighth. Drew Bowser (1-3) picked up the second hit of the evening in the ninth. The Pelicans walked just once and left three on base.

Starter Luis Rujano (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned across four innings in his first start of the season. Reliever Starlyn Pichardo allowed the second run while getting two outs in the bottom of the eighth.

It was a career night for Hillcats’ starter Matt Wilkinson (2-0), who struck out 15 across six no-hit shutout innings with just one walk allowed. The bullpen shut the door with five more strikeouts to finish at 20 for the night.

A two-run third pushed the Hillcats in front as Luis Durango (1-4, RBI) knocked in a run with a single and Christian Knapczyk (2-4, 2B, RBI) also hit an RBI single. Tommy Hawke (2-3, 2B, RBI, BB) drew an RBI walk in the eighth to increase the lead to 3-0.

The Pelicans and Hillcats will clash for game four of the series on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
