66ers Drop 5th Straight

August 14, 2013

Lancaster, CA -In the most heartbreaking loss of their five game slide, the Inland Empire 66ers (62-60, 25-27) fell by a 6-5 final to the Lancaster JetHawks (72-50, 33-19) who won the game and clinched the series on a walk off RBI single in the 9th.

After an outstanding early effort that saw the 66ers take the early lead on Michael Snyder's team leading 23rd home run of the season, and maintain it through five outstanding innings from Danny Reynolds, things turned south in the 6th. The first five JetHawks to the plate reached or rounded the bases safely, and at the end of the inning it was 4-3 Lancaster.

Inland Empire retook the lead on Anthony Bemboom's first home run of the year, a two run homer in the 8th, making it 5-4 Inland Empire. But the 66ers made several major mistakes in the games waning innings. Aside from a close call infield single in the 9th by Eric Stamets, Bemboom's bomb off the batters eye was the only hit for Inland Empire in the last four innings, an error gave Lancaster their equalizer in the 8th, and in the 9th the 66ers walked the bases loaded prior to Joe Sclafani's walk off single.

Despite the 66ers fifth straight loss, and ninth setback in their last 11 games, the 66ers are still inching closer to the postseason. Losses by High Desert and Lake Elsinore leave the 66ers with a magic number of 12 to make the postseason, and 14 to earn home field advantage in the first round. The 66ers return to Lancaster for the season finale with the JetHawks Thursday night. The game starts at 7:00 and can be heard on AM 1050 KCAA. The 66ers final home stand of the 2013 season begins Tuesday, August 20th, and includes a Fireworks extravaganza on Friday, August 23rd.
