Stockton, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino opened a four-game set at Stockton and a seven-game northern road-swing with a 7-5 win over the Ports on Wednesday. Taylor Ward homered and was one of six 66ers batters that had two-hit nights as the Sixers have won three consecutive games.
Inland Empire (42-48, 12-8) notched five straight hits to open the game against Ports starter Chris Bassitt (0-1) who was on a Major League injury rehab assignment for Oakland. Brennon Lund singled to open the game and moved to second on a throwing error. Troy Montgomery then singled extending his hit streak to 15 games and giving IE a 1-0 lead. Jose Rojas' infield single boosted his streak to 21 games. Taylor Ward had a RBI singled followed by a RBI bunt singled for Kyle Survance Jr. After a double play Jared Walsh capped the four-run first with a sharp RBI base-hit. The Ports (45-45, 9-11) got an unearned run against Sixers' starter Jose Rodriguez (7-7) in the second but Inland Empire bounced back with three more as Ward drilled a line drive homer to left, his sixth of the year, to make it 5-1. Cody Ramer's two-run ground rule double made it 7-1 but would be the final time the Sixers scored. The Ports got two in the third and another in the eighth inning making it 7-4. Nathan Bates got out of the eighth leaving the bases loaded. In the ninth with two down he allowed a solo homer to Brett Siddall (13) and a base hit to Mikey White but popped Seth Brown up to left to end the game at 7-5 and earn his fourth save.
The series continues Thursday at 7:10 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
