Early Damage Piles Up On Bowie In Saturday Night Loss To Harrisburg

BOWIE, MD – The Bowie Baysox allowed a trio of two-run home runs in a losing effort to the Harrisburg Senators, as they fell by a 13-4 final on Saturday Night at Prince George’s Stadium.

Left-handed starter Cade Povich struggled out of the gate, as Harrisburg’s Jack Dunn led off the game with a single, before JT Arruda ambushed the first pitch he saw for the Senators’ first two-run blast of the evening. Blake Rutherford was hit by a pitch following the Arruda long ball, and eventually scored as an unearned run from second on a single and error by Baysox center fielder Donta’ Williams, giving Harrisburg a 3-0 lead before Bowie would come to the plate.

The Baysox bats would try to fight back on a few occasions. In the bottom of the second, Bowie would pull it back within a run. Three straight batters reached to start the frame against left-handed starter Alex Troop – Hudson Haskin singled, followed by a walk to John Rhodes, before Donta’ Williams knocked Haskin across with an RBI single. TT Bowens would ground into a double play later in the frame, but Rhodes would cross home from third to make it a 3-2 game. Harrisburg would answer with a run in the top of the third – an RBI double by Onix Vega plating Donovan Casey after a one-out walk to give the Senators a 4-2 edge. The Baysox, again, closed the gap to a run after two doubles – the first from Heston Kjerstad and another from Cesar Prieto to bring him home.

However, the game would then get away from Bowie in the fourth and fifth frames. The first four batters reached in the fourth. Jose Sanchez singled to start the frame, leading to Dunn hitting Harrisburg’s second two-run homer, all before back-to-back singles from Arruda and Rutherford finally chased Povich (L, 4-5), who ended the night allowing a season-high nine hits and six runs, five of which were earned. Right-hander Conner Loeprich would enter and navigate the remainder of the fourth damage free. In the fifth, Loeprich ran into struggles of his own. Vega was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, as Valera doubled him home to extend the Senators’ edge to 7-3. Valera then crossed the plate on a Sanchez single. With two outs in the frame, Rutherford clobbered the final two-run home run of the evening, making it a 10-3 Harrisburg lead.

Troop (W, 3-4) would allow an opposite field solo home run to Tim Susnara for his first Baysox long ball in the bottom half of the fifth, but went si frames for Harrisburg, firing 103 pitches and striking out six in addition to the six hits and four earned runs allowed.

Two scoreless frames of relief from right-hander Tyler Burch extended his active scoreless innings streak to 11. Right-hander Xavier Moore took the ball for Bowie in the final two frames, allowing three runs in the ninth on a bases loaded walk to Arruda, a wild pitch that scored Valera, and a groundout from Rutherford. Meanwhile, the Baysox were kept off the board for the final three frames of the night by Senators right-hander Odalvi Javier (S, 1).

The loss drops Bowie’s record to 18-30. The Baysox will look to salvage a split in the six-game series with the Senators when they wrap up the homestand on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET from Prince George’s Stadium.
