Pitching Continues Dominance in Finale

JUPITER, Fla. (April 15, 2018) - For a third consecutive game, starting pitching dominated Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium for the Florida Fire Frogs to close out a three-game weekend set with the Palm Beach Cardinals, with the road team taking a 3-1 victory to avoid the sweep.

Bryse Wilson (1-0) and Ian Oxnevad (1-1) dueled their way through five innings, with neither starter yielding much on the bases.
Wilson retired the first five men he faced before allowing a double to Andy Young, but then struck out J.B. Woodman for his fourth strikeout in just two frames. The Atlanta Braves 13th-ranked prospect (MLB.com) did not surrender any more hits through his remaining three innings, and finished the day with five strikeouts.
Florida's (3-8) starting pitching was stellar through the weekend, as the combination of Joey Wentz , Ian Anderson and Wilson combined to allow just four hits in 15 innings, while keeping Palm Beach (7-4) off the scoreboard in the process. The trio of prospects struck out 16 over the three games.
The contest remained scoreless going into the sixth before the Fire Frogs broke through with a three-spot to take the late lead.
Jared James (3x4, R) collected his third hit of the game with one out in the inning and advanced to second on a ground out to third off the bat of Lucas Herbert (0x4). Braxton Davidson (1x2, R, 2B, RBI, 2 BB) then smashed a double to center to give the visitors their first run of the game, and end the day for Oxnevad.
Jordan Rodgers (1x4, R, HR, 2 RBI) welcomed Jacob Patterson out of the bullpen with a two-run shot over the wall in left for his first home run of 2018, and provide the three-run cushion.
Oxnevad surrendered two of the three runs on the day on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts in the losing effort.
The Cardinals broke up the shutout bid with a run against Thomas Burrows in the bottom half of the sixth with a two-out rally.
José Martínez was hit by a pitch and moved up to second after a free pass to Chase Pinder. Evan Mendoza drove the run home with a single to right to cut the Fire Frogs advantage down to two.
Connor Johnstone relieved Burrows with a man on first and two out in the eighth, and punched out Brian O'Keefe to get out of the inning. 
The Georgia native bridged the way to Devan Watts (SV, 1), who retired the side in order in the ninth the secure the two-run victory.
The Fire Frogs take part in a league-wide off day on Monday before returning to action to take on the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday night at Osceola County Stadium for game one of a three-game series and six-game homestand. RHP Jeremy Walker (0-1, 13.50) gets the call for Florida in the opener, while it is not yet known who will take the hill for St. Lucie. First pitch is set for 6:31 p.m.
Latin Night will be on April 19, where fan can join the Florida Fire Frogs as they transform into Los Coquis to celebrate our Hispanic community! The Fire Frogs will sport their Los Coquis jerseys and auction them off in the team store during the game., and Superhero Night on April 21. Money will also be raised for relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
Friday, April 20, is Bark in the Park, sponsored by Just 4 Dogs. Fans can bring their canine friend to Osceola County Stadium with absolutely no charge! The first 50 dogs will receive a water bowl courtesy of Just 4 Dogs and the Florida Fire Frogs.
Superhero Night is Saturday, April 21, where fans can join the Fire Frogs as they throw on their capes and cowls to protect Kissimmee from the invading Flying Tigers on Saturday night. Specialty jerseys will be auctioned off in the team store during the game.
