Arauz named league Player of the Week

August 8, 2016

GREENEVILLE, TN - Greeneville Astros infielder Jonathan Arauz has been named the Appalachian League Player of the Week by MiLB.com for the week of August 1-August 7. Over six games during that span, Arauz had five multi-hit games and batted .500 (13-for-26) with eight runs scored, three doubles, one triple, one home run, three RBI and three walks with an OPS of 1.374.

This marks the eighth time in club history and the second time this season a member of the Greeneville Astros has earned league player of the week honors. Infielder Miguelangel Sierra received the award for the week of July 4-July 10.

It is the third time the Astros have received the award twice in one season. Connor Goedert and Hector Roa both earned the recognition in 2015 while Frank Almonte and Nathan Metroka took the honors in 2008.

Arauz, who originally signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as a non-drafted free agent out of Panama in 2014, was acquired by the Astros in a December 2015 trade. The 18-year-old spent the 2015 season with the Gulf Coast League Phillies where he batted .254 with 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs, and 18 RBI.

This season, Arauz has appeared in a team-high 34 games for the Astros with 18 coming at shortstop and 16 at second base. For the season, he is leading the club with 39 hits and nine doubles while batting .295 (39-for-132) with 18 runs, one triple, two home runs, 15 RBI, and 11 walks.
