Casey Golden broke the Grand Junction Rockies record for most RBI in a season, while Shael Mendoza broke the record for most stolen bases in a season in a 13-9 win over the Orem Owlz Friday night at Brent Brown Ballpark.
Golden entered the game tied with David Dahl for the club record, but with the Rockies already leading 4-1, he doubled home Mendoza, who had just tied the stolen base record. Golden reached base four times in the game.
After Golden broke the RBI record, Ramon Marcelino followed with his 18th home run of the season to cap a five run inning and give the Rockies a 7-1 lead. It was Marcelino's second home run of the game, as he got the scoring started with a 2-run homer in the third inning. It's the Rockies sixth multi-home run game of the season and the second for Marcelino.
The Rockies added to their 7-1 lead when Jeff Moberg started the fifth inning with the first inside the park home run in franchise history to make it 8-1. It's Moberg's 10th home run of the season, becoming the fifth player to have a double-digit home run season, which matches the club's total from its first five seasons.
Orem sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom of the fifth to get within two, but after both teams went scoreless in the sixth, the Rockies scored four times in the seventh. Kennard McDowell's second home run of the season started the inning, giving the Rockies four homers in the game and 113 for the season. Joey Bartosic followed the home run with a single, and moved to third when Mendoza singled. With Golden at the plate, Mendoza passed Manny Melendez for the top spot on the club's single season stolen base list with his 25th, and a throwing error on the play allowed Bartosic to score and Mendoza to get to third. Golden doubled home Mendoza, then Marcelino singled home Golden to make it 12-6, but the Owlz battled back.
They batted around in the bottom of the inning and scored three, two-out runs to cut the lead in half, but Colton Hathcock struck out Ryan Vega with the bases loaded, and then he retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth, after the Rockies scored to make it a four-run game in the top of the inning.
Jefry Valdez struck out two in a scoreless bottom of the ninth, sealing the Rockies 20th win of the second half. They are now 38-37 on the season, guaranteeing themselves of at least a .500 record in 2017.
Marcelino had three hits and five RBI, while Golden doubled twice to go with five walks.
Bartosic added three hits with Mendoza, McDowell and Tyler Bates adding a pair.
