San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino pounded out 13 hits, four belonging to CF Jo Adell plus homers from Jahmai Jones and Brandon Marsh but still fell to Rancho Cucamonga 10-4 on Saturday. The win coupled with Lake Elsinore's loss gave the Quakes (35-34) the California League's South Division first half title.
Jeren Kendall opened the game with a homer for the Quakes off Inland Empire starter Simon Matthews' (0-1) second pitch; it was Kendall's sixth of the year. Matthews then struck out the side (yes Tim Kurkjian and Merv, it's still called striking out the side). In the home half of the first the Sixers (32-37) tied the game on Brandon Marsh's first homer of the year with IE, a solo shot to left. The Quakes put up two in the top of the third on Omar Estevez's two-run double but the 66ers took the lead in the home half; Jones drilled a solo homer to center, his seventh and Jack Kruger and Jordan Zimmerman followed with RBI singles to make it 4-3. The Sixers did not score again. The Quakes took a lead in the fourth on Steve Berman's two-out two-run double. Berman struck again in the sixth when he hit a three-run homer. The Quakes added another run in the frame for a 10-4 advantage. Jason Richman (2-5) earned the win with three scoreless innings out of the pen. Kruger had three hits (two doubles) for the Sixers while Zimmerman and Roberto Baldoquin each had two. Adell led the way for the Sixers with four hits, one double and snagged his seventh steal in seven attempts.
The series concludes Sunday at 2:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
